Paris, August 3, 2015

I welcome two important, positive decisions which confirm the international community’s determination to adopt a universal climate agreement in Paris in December 2015.

On Sunday, the text of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was approved by negotiators from every United Nations member state, with a view to its adoption at the New York summit at the end of September. Among other things, the text calls for an ambitious and universal agreement in Paris in December and creates a new Sustainable Development Goal: urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

On Monday, President Obama adopted a regulation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from American power plants. This plan demonstrates the United States’ commitment to the fight against climate disruption./.
