Director-General,
On behalf of the EU and its member states, I would like to inform you that we do not intend to take part in the award ceremony for the UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences, to be held at UNESCO headquarters on 17 July 2012.
The EU position regarding the prize is well known and was clearly stated in the debate of the Executive Board earlier this year. We deeply regret the resolution which obliges you to issue the prize, adopted by a majority of the Executive Board on 9 March 2012 against the votes of the European Union./.
